From Children’s Civil Service Exams to Multicultural Traditional Weddings: Cultural Festival Held in

Burim and Chang-dong

Over 1,000 Locals and Foreigners Participate in ‘Burim K-FESTA’; Event Links Traditional Market with

Local Commercial District

A festival blending traditional Korean culture with global cultures took place in the Burim Market and

Chang-dong areas of Masan-happo-gu, Changwon, drawing over 1,000 participants, including both

locals and foreign residents. The event served as a venue for cultural exchange, bringing together

local residents and foreign workers through activities such as a mock traditional civil service exam for

children and a traditional Korean wedding ceremony for a multicultural couple.

The Changwon Commercial District Revitalization Foundation announced the conclusion of ‘Burim K-

FESTA,’ held on the 11th at Burim Cultural Plaza and the Chang-dong Integrated Shopping District.

Launched this year, the festival was organized by combining the 13th Masan Burim Market Hanbok

Festival with the ‘2026 Hamoye Festival,’ an event fostering harmony among foreign workers.

In the ‘Burim Civil Service Exam’ program—a highlight of the festival—children dressed in traditional

scholar robes and experienced the historic exam process using *hanji* (traditional Korean paper) and

brush pens. Additionally, a multicultural couple who had not previously held a wedding ceremony

celebrated their union through a traditional Korean wedding, offering a special spectacle for festival

visitors.

Other activities included a ‘Hanbok Alley Tour,’ where foreign participants explored Burim Market and

the streets of Chang-dong dressed in *hanbok*, as well as a *hanbok* style showcase and talent

contest. Hands-on events were also organized to introduce the traditional foods and cultures of

countries such as Nepal, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Cambodia.

Merchants from Burim Market prepared food for visitors and actively participated in the event.

Approximately 22 *hanbok* and fabric shops within the market joined the festivities, helping to

promote *hanbok* culture and the market's long-standing traditions. Local companies—including

Monggo Foods, Malgeun Naeil, and Masan Makgeolli—also participated, showcasing their products

to foreign visitors.

The event was organized through the collaboration of the Burim Market Merchants Association and

the Changwon Commercial Area Revitalization Foundation, alongside the Changwon Foreign Worker

Support Center, Changwon Masan Family Center, Burim Creative Craft Village, and Changdong Art

Village. By linking traditional markets, art spaces, and multicultural organizations, the festival expanded

the scope of participation.

The Changwon Commercial Area Revitalization Foundation plans to continue developing cultural

content that brings together foreign residents, multicultural families, and the local community.

However, determining whether participation in the festival actually led to increased sales in the Burim

Market and Changdong commercial districts remains a task to be assessed through separate sales

data.
